It’s been a few years since I last wrote in our Adventure site, as I’ve been documenting our travels in a number of different places. I thought that this might be the time to return to StangerAdventures.com though, as we are about to head off on a month-long trip to Scotland in celebration of our 40th anniversary. It seems apropos to return to this blog, as my very first entries into StangerAdventures.com were exactly 10 years ago, when we spent the better part of a month in London for our 30th.
If you’re wondering why we chose Scotland, I should start by saying that in the last 10 years, we’ve been fortunate enough to go on a number of warm-weather vacations (Cabo, Cuba, St. Lucia, Dominican Republic, etc), and many different adventures in the U.S, including a couple of extended road trips.
They’ve all been wonderful, and when I think about the beaches and streets we’ve walked, the stadiums and arenas we’ve visited, and the history we’ve seen and touched, well, we have been truly blessed to be able to do all that we’ve done.
But I keep getting asked, why Scotland???
On May 1st, 2017, I announced my retirement from DSA, the ad agency Mary and I started back in 1997, and when I posed the “now what” question to Mary, without missing a beat, she said “let’s go to Ireland” – and 17 days later we were off. We booked the first 3 nights in Dublin, and from there, we simply made it up as went. That adventure is documented elsewhere, and at some point in the next 12 months, I will transfer those stories to this blog, perhaps along with a few others. Needless to say, we had an absolutely amazing time, and Mary proved to be an absolute “wiz”, at driving a standard on the wrong side of the road. What a great trip that was!
As we began talking about what to do for our 40th, we considered a number of different ideas; Japan, Australia, a Yangtze River cruise, and many others. Yet, when it came time to book something, we both started talking about how much fun we’d had on the “make it up as we go” trip to Ireland, and almost simultaneously said “want to do the same thing in Scotland, that we did in Ireland?”.
And so that is what we are going to do!
Tomorrow, August 28th, we start our adventure that will take us from Vancouver, to Toronto, to London, and finally to Glasgow, all in less than 24 hours.
This is how it all began, 40 years ago, in Amherstburg, Ontario.
I’m looking forward to telling you what happens next!
